Lack of goalies clouds season

As every year, Sunday Morning Road Hockey is set to begin its 16th season under a cloud. But this year's may be darker than ever.

With Lobsterboy's status still uncertain, Ottoman mostly absent, and Pig Farming Goalie frequently pre-occupied with slopping the sows, the specter of weekly goalie crises looms over the upcoming campaign, which begins with a two-week pre-season schedule on Oct. 1.

"Given both the pattern of Stanley Stick dates in the last couple of years, and that i won't have played in the 'league' in four months, I probably will not be able to add a third consecutive MVP award to my small but selective list of achievements," said a disheartened PFG. "Ah bummer."

After one of the most exciting, hard-fought Stanley Stick series in years, hopes were high that the momentum would last through the summer and launch the Sunday game to even loftier heights in the new season. But that enthusiasm was tempered in a big way in August, when only five roadsters - two of them lapsed players who haven't slapped an evil orange plastic ball in anger in years - reported for a special summer scrimmage.

The regular season begins Sunday, Oct.15.
