Underdogs get bitten

The underdog's job to force a decisive mini-game in Sunday's Stanley Stick Championship finale just got a little tougher. The Living Legend has announced he'll miss the season's climactic showdown to tend to a family emergency.

And that's just the latest blow to the hopes of his team's moribund mates as they try to rebound from a 20-13 loss in the series' opener. The Colonel is a gametime decision as he also wrestles with a familial crisis. And diminutive sniper, the Kid, continues to struggle with a lingering back injury that kept him out of the lineup for the last two games of the regular season.

While the expected addition of stalwart centerman Wendel, who missed the series' opener because of a previously-scheduled social engagement, may spark his side's anemic offense, there's no doubt they're facing a monumental challenge to solve the hot hand, and pads, of Ottoman, who was at the top of his game in last week's opener.

"Ottoman has to be the early favourite for MVP," says notorious gameshow host gone bad, Wink, who will have to become his team's inspirational leader with the loss of his fellow founding father. "He bailed them out time and time again."

Sensing their opportunity for a series' sweep, Sunday's favorites are reportedly stepping up their preparation, with pre-game practices and strategy sessions. As well as a healthy dose of trash-talking.

"Our team is stacked," says speedy centerman, Rudy.

Oh stop playing the wittle wittle underdawgs routine you guys...its really quite embarassing. Stand up & be counted!

Posted by: Unabomber at June 5, 2004 07:47 PM

By all means liquor him up, he plays better that way. I'll bring the barf bags.

The way the other team is talking, I think anything better than a 20 - 5 score constitutes a defeat.

If we do manage more than 5 goals, look for Don Rudy to make us an offer we can't refuse.

Posted by: Wendel at June 5, 2004 04:36 PM

Rudy and the Henchmen....I like the sounds of that.

By the way, expect a very hungover Lobsterboy on Sun. He's coming over to my place to watch the game and I'm going to get him completely liquored up.

Posted by: PaulOne at June 5, 2004 04:03 PM

Heck, the way Rude-y and his merry henchman are talking, I'll just be happy if we can happen to score a couple of goals.

Posted by: Wink at June 5, 2004 08:19 AM

The only thing we're "stacked" with is heart, determination & good teamwork...well that and one other thing I cannot mention being this is a 'family' board.

Posted by: Unabomber at June 5, 2004 02:22 AM

It's true, we know we're the underdogs. Hence, we have nothing to lose. There's really no pressure. But can you imagine if we win? Boy wouldn't that be a long way for the "Stacked Team" to fall?

Posted by: TheColonel at June 4, 2004 11:58 PM

You guys spew so much hot air you should be sailing or ballooning not playing hockey. Meanwhile, we the underdogs are conserving energy and honing our focus on the glorious battle to come.

Posted by: Wendel at June 4, 2004 10:56 PM

The underdogs are fine. Thanks for asking. Sorry we haven't been into corresponding but we've been too busy buying weapons...

Posted by: Wink at June 4, 2004 12:38 PM

Hummmm,

All quiet on the underdog front.

Have they been "posted" into submission?

Posted by: PaulOne at June 4, 2004 12:12 PM

MUUA HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHHAHAHAH!

yer goin down wendel

Posted by: rudy at June 3, 2004 11:34 PM

Any more chest-beating and you'll all be too tenderized to play on Sunday.

Posted by: Wendel at June 3, 2004 10:40 PM

The pressure is fine. Thanks for asking, Mr. Bomber.

Posted by: Wink at June 3, 2004 04:12 PM

Hey Private,

School starts at 10.30 Sunday morning.

Don't be late because based on what I saw from you last week, you can't afford miss any lessons.

Posted by: PaulOne at June 3, 2004 12:53 PM

Good Wink, that's how you play best.

I apologize to you, Paul One, Lobster, Elvis, and PFG for the post in question. I did not intend it to be one of insinuation; however, in reflection I can see how you may have read it that way ...

... and I'll ask Paul One to leave my "Privates" out of it from this point forward.

Posted by: TheColonel at June 3, 2004 11:50 AM

I sense a chink in the armour. Is the Stanley Stick pressure cooker too hot for some to take?

Posted by: Unabomber at June 3, 2004 11:26 AM

I'll be there and I'll be angry.

Posted by: Wink at June 3, 2004 10:19 AM

Wink, I think you know I'm not one to back down, but I also don't feel that I have to come up with an artificial explanation just because you want me to. My explanation stands as is because that is the vain in which I wrote it. If you want to make something more of it then go ahead, I can't stop you. Check my post again, I didn't say that one of you wrote it, I said it "sounds like something" one of you may have written, they are not the same thing, and I'm sorry they were construed as such.

I think you should harness some of that anger and bring it to the court on Sunday Wink. Use it as motivation against the other team that would be a better way for you to focus your frustrations, rather than trying to make a mountain out a molehill on this forum.

Mario should just check the IPs of the posters to determine if there are any matches between the Rudy posts and a historical post from someone else to get a lead on who's behind it.

Posted by: TheColonel at June 3, 2004 09:50 AM

Rudy,

Way to come clean on the previous post.

I'm thinking "The Private" (the player formerly known as "The Colonel")owes a few apologies.

Hey Private, are you showing on Sun?

More importantly, are you ready to be schooled?

Posted by: PaulOne at June 3, 2004 09:48 AM

I was a gesture in the name of good hockey.
again, in truth i did write that, and of course there was no disrepect intended for the legend and his situation, I know as well as any that without mario there is no roadhockey, Im trying to allow for a more evenly matched final, how many guys do you need to lose, for however personal a reason, before admitting its not gonna be fun for you to show up and face a non stop onslaught from lak, elvis, bomber, nibs p. one, and Me. and you too cowboy, and yer still a pal right Idol.
but if you choose, If thats how you want it, dont recognize what the possibilities are, ignore any offerings, choose to interpret things as blindly as you can.
Mario if you read my post as the others did, I apologize, that was not my intention.
and pfg, if you want to reinjure your knee, which no one wants to see, your very welcome to. and kid beetle bird gump and wink, if you guys want to take on the world, of course you can.
as for TheColonel....

Posted by: rudy at June 3, 2004 08:29 AM

Woh, woh. Settle down everyone. We can't beat ourselves before we get the chance to beat the opposition.

Posted by: Living Legend at June 3, 2004 07:14 AM

Dear Colonel,
I take exception to you trying to pass off, "I wasn't referring to the words in the post, but the writing style," as some kind explanation for what you wrote. What? I'm not saying that you did it...I'm just saying that it took the kind of skills and abilities with the written word that you guys feature? That's lame.
You think one of us did it? Fine, but I'd suggest you'd better come up with sort of proof, Nancy Drew. (Technically, I think you committed five counts of libel, but I'll have to check with Wendell on that.) And if you're going to take a swing at the five of us like that I suggest you keep comin', because you ain't backing your way out of it.

Posted by: Wink at June 3, 2004 12:23 AM

Wink, I wasn't referring to the words in the post, I was referring to the writing style of the post. I take exception to you drawing a parallel between my words and those of the pseudo-Rudy ... they aren't even close to the same thing. Give your head a shake.

Posted by: TheColonel at June 2, 2004 11:54 PM

Bite me, Colonel. It wasn't me. The comments by the fake Rudy were classless; you trying to pin it on somebody weren't far behind.

Posted by: Wink at June 2, 2004 11:43 PM

Wasn't me, but, it certainly was classless, insensitive, ill-timed and stupid.

Posted by: PaulOne at June 2, 2004 10:25 PM

I agree, that's not Rudy. If it was, he's bi-polar to say the least. It actually sounds like something that might be written by one of five different roadsters: Elvis, Paul One, Lobster, Wink, or you PFG. I haven't decide who yet, time will tell.

Posted by: TheColonel at June 2, 2004 10:06 PM

interesting comments by rudy, surprising to say the least. i suppose if that was you who placed that post then you are emerging from your generally quiet, self-effacing shell. Nice of you to mention that mario's reason for not playing is because of the stinging loss; his father's rapidly declining health wouldn't have anything to do with it, now would it? How's the jaw feeling? You might want to miss the next game in case anything, you know, accidental happens to it during the game. You 'picture' might not look so good then, will it?

Posted by: pfg at June 2, 2004 07:21 PM

well what now? that loss musta really stung, everyones finding a way out, colonel pretty soon it'll be just you, your folks, wendel and a puke stained tender. Im being sincere when I say that you guys dont stand a chance, truthfully I'd prefer more of a challenge than you'll be able to muster. so I ask, what now, how does this work out so that everyone can leave sunday with at least some feeling of self worth. I now its a sin but maybe, redraw, trade, a maniac sunday of minigame best of 5
i still want my picture with the cup though, who's gonna take that?

Posted by: rudy at June 2, 2004 07:05 PM

All I want to know is, what happened to the traditional multi-media Stanley Stick preview featurette this year Suburb?!?
